Mangyan Village in Puerto Galera

On my impromptu… err… three days’ notice trip to Puerto Galera last month hosted by Buri Resort and Spa, aside from the comfortable and 4-star accommodation they are also offering tours, it could be an island hopping (I’ll post separate entry for that), snorkeling, or having a city tour. You can also combine all of this if you wanted to. Yeah, everything can be arranged based on your preferences, so there’s nothing to worry about if you’re not up into something, you can always customize your own for more relaxing and enjoyable trip.

Meanwhile, one of the places we've visited was the tribe of the Mangyans, Mangyan Village. It is located at the foot of the Mt. Malasimbo at Sitio Talipanan, Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro. I love exploring places like this, it was like more of appreciating our culture and of course, appreciating more of our life. Theirs could be as simple as you have imagined. They work eight hours a day by weaving “nito” and "ratan" to make it into a baskets, plates, TheBracelets, key chains, vases, coin purses, bags, or other arts and crafts worth to be displayed and used in our home.

In Mangyan Village, their artworks are also displayed so that tourists who visits the village can purchase the items they made and the sale will go directly to the families who weaved the items. Thus, it explains why it has a name on it, for easy tracking and to transact directly to the person. I’ve also had a chance to interview one of them and asked how much money they get from everyday work, he said it is more or less P100 a day and these woven arts and crafts are also sold in Metro Manila which displays can be found in the Ayala Museum Shop, 3/F Greenbelt 5 and Glorietta 1.

Furthermore, this Mangyan Village is one of Ayala Foundation’s program under Sustainable Livelihood program. As for our visit last month, they are building homes for the Mangyans which is around 100 houses so they would not go back to the mountains and plus, one also told me that Ayala also giving sack of rice for each families. Hooray for that. Hoping that more Mangyans would brighten their life by having education and attaining training that would enhance their skills.

Have a Blessed Sunday!
