First in Asia: American Eye Center Launches Most Advanced Method of Cataract Surgery

A new treatment for cataracts has just been unveiled by American Eye Center (AEC), which promises to provide patients with the most advanced all-laser cataract procedure---the first of its kind in Asia.
Dubbed the Alcon LenSx femtosecond laser surgery, this new equipment brings an unprecedented level of safety, speed and precision in treating cataracts, and enhances the host of options for surgical-based methods that AEC offers its clients.

From a surgical perspective, advances in cataract treatment have improved the way ophthalmologists deal with this condition in the past two decades. We have seen how the merger of technology and surgical ingenuity contributed to making cataract surgery the modern-day miracle that it is today. Currently, we can remove the cataract through a very small (2-3mm) incision in the eyeball using fine surgical blades and implant a multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) that restores full functional vision in patients after surgery. This is called “Phacoemulsification”, presently the standard in cataract practice worldwide. Unfortunately, this procedure has often been mistakenly referred to as “laser eye surgery”—which it is NOT. It is more appropriate to call this procedure “small-incision cataract surgery”, “sutureless cataract surgery”, or “no-stitch cataract surgery” for the layman. True laser-assisted cataract surgery has never been available to patients until today—with the introduction of the Alcon LenSx femtosecond laser surgery.
Alcon LenSX Femtosecond Laser
The Alcon LenSX femtosecond laser differs from the traditional methods of cataract surgery by the absence of the blade. By using very short yet intense bursts of near-infrared light, the Alcon LenSX femtosecond laser technology is able to create extremely precise subsurface cuts without manual intervention The blades used to create the small incisions in the eye have been completely replaced by this laser, making the incisions more precise and predictable. In addition, the circular opening that is created in the human lens in order to access the cataract (called a capsulotomy) which was traditionally performed by human hands has now been replaced by the femtosecond laser, making the capsulotomies more architecturally round and centered. Studies have shown that this is very important in intraocular lens stability and refractive predictability of surgical outcomes (In one study by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, femtosecond laser incisions achieved perfect capsulotomy diameter accuracy in 100 percent of cases). Finally, the actual cataract is also fragmented by the femtosecond laser making it much easier and less traumatic for the surgeon to remove and clean it up prior to placement of the IOL. In short, the femtosecond laser has replaced many of the steps in the cataract surgery that were previously performed by human hands, i.e., resulting in less surgical error and better predictability of outcomes. Results are more precise than any other previous or current methods of cataract surgery.
Cataract Surgery using Alcon LenSX Femtosecond Laser
Dr. Cesar Ramon G. Espiritu, who specializes in Cornea, External Disease treatment at AEC, said that this new technology shows the company’s commitment to provide the best eye care to its patients.

“The Alcon LenSx femtosecond laser surgery is currently the most advanced method for cataract treatment, and we’re proud to be the first in Asia to offer it,” he says. “We want thousands of Filipinos suffering from cataracts to see that treatment is now even faster, much safer, more precise and definitely pain-free.”
Doctors Using Alcon LenSX Femtosecond Laser
Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the Philippines, with an estimated half a million Filipinos blind or having some degree of visual impairment. This disease, which hits almost everyone due to aging, involves the gradual formation of a cloudy film in the lens of the eye, varying in degree from slight to complete opacity, and obstructing the passage of light.

Espiritu emphasizes that patients must decide their preferred method of surgery together with an expert ophthalmologist. AEC is backed by a team of Associated Eye Specialists, the most experienced and longest-running EyeMD group practice in the country, which comprises 17 doctors with various subspecialties. AEC also boasts a staff of highly qualified optometrists, nurses and counselors to provide patients with personalized quality eye care.

The American Eye Center has been breaking new ground when it comes to ophthalmic care since its establishment in 1995.  Accredited with the Department of Health and the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, AEC is fully equipped with branches located at the Level 5, EDSA Shangri-La Plaza, and at the Level 4 of Greenbelt 5, Makati City. For inquiries, call 636-0762 or 729-EYES (3937) or visit www.americaneye.com.ph, follow eyetweets in Twitter, and “like AEC account” in Facebook.

JayR Produces Own Christmas Album "Holiday of Love"

Platinum Prince of Soul JayR’s Christmas album Holiday of Love may be one of the projects closest to the singer’s heart. Aside from admitting that he is certainly a “Christmas person,” this album features how gifted he is not only as a singer, but also a musician and a music producer.
Holiday of Love was produced by JayR himself for his own Homeworkz label, and distributed by Universal Records.

This album is very special to me, and I am very proud of it,” says JayR. “I hope everyone grabs a copy. I hope you’ll let me be a part of your Holiday of Love.” Classic Holiday tunes like Holy Night, Do You See What I See?, Give Love on Christmas Day, Sleigh Ride, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, White Christmas, Into (O Christmas Tree), Winter Wonderland, The Christmas Song, This Christmas, Santa Baby,  and The Little Drummer Boy are given the updated, R&B, groovy feel.

Wrapping up the entire album are two original songs close to Jay-R's heart. There's Spread the Love written by his sister, Jing. But the most special song found in the album is track number 11 intriguingly titled, Tito Remy—the same person cited by Jay-R as the man who inspired the entire project. "He's a very close Tito sa akin po, uncle ko po," Jay-R confessed, "he died before the holiday so I wrote him a Christmas song."

After the Holiday Season, JayR is all set to start working on his new album under Universal Records which will further highlight how extremely versatile he is as a singer.
JayR is being managed by Carlo Orosa of STAGES, which handles the careers of Christian Bautista, Karylle, Sam Concepcion, Enrique Gil, Zia Quizon, Krista Kleiner, Tippy Dos Santos, Mikel Campos, Fred Lo, among others.

PCIJ MEDIA Killings Series Part 2 “The Herson Hinolan Case: SEE NO EVIL”

The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism in partnership with GMA News TV airs The Herson Hinolan Case: See No Evil this Saturday night at 9:55 pm on Channel 11.

Herson Hinolan was a hard-hitting radio broadcaster for Bombo Radyo Kalibo. Hinolan’s bombastic and aggressive commentary earned him the ire of many Aklanon politicians. Colleagues remember that Hinolan even engaged in a heated argument with Lezo Mayor Alfredo Arcenio while on the air, to the point where the two challenged each other to a gunfight.

Hinolan was shot on the night of Nov. 13 2004 upon emerging from a town carnival. The gunman and an accomplice fled the scene on board a motorcycle. A few days later, police achieved a major breakthrough when three witnesses came forward to identify the gunman as Mayor Arcenio himself. The three executed affidavits stating that they saw Arcenio walk behind Hinolan and pull the trigger before jumping onto a bodyguard’s motorcycle. With three witnesses in the bag, authorities thought it was “case closed.”

A few months after the murder, however, one witness after another recanted, contradicting their earlier affidavits.  Seven years later, the case is still pending before the Cebu Regional Trial Court. In an interview with the PCIJ, Mayor Arcenio says he never attempted to influence any of the witnesses.

Don’t miss The Herson Hinolan Case: SEE NO EVIL, the second instalment of the five-part series of PCIJ Media Killings this Saturday, November 26, 9.55pm after Front Row on GMA News TV.

Movie - The Road by Yam Laranas

Another scary creation from Yam Laranas, The Road will be showing on the big screen starting November 30, 2011.
Last night, I was invited to watch a horror movie that made me not to scream but made me think on what had happened to the killer past life for him to kill ‘till the present time, however, the film didn’t fail to amazed me and made my heart beat faster. Kindly watch the trailer below so you may have hint on what is the story all about.
The Road is a story about a twelve-year-old cold case, which is reopened when three teenagers go missing while traversing an infamous and abandoned road. As investigators try to find leads to the whereabouts of the missing teens, they also unearth the road’s gruesome past that spans two decades – a history of abduction, crimes and murders. Although the road is isolated, anyone who tries to pass through it can be sure that he is not alone. Lingering in the dark and desolate pathway is a vengeful ghost who makes sure no one leaves the road – alive!

Known for his unorthodox brand of film-making, “The Road” director Yam Laranas (Sigaw/The Echo) promises to treat moviegoers to a fresh new approach to horror.

The story was great, interesting and intriguing that made me more focused on the movie so that I won’t miss anything. It’s my first time to watch a horror movie that the actor and actresses are not just screaming all throughout the scenes.

I love the “The Road” simply because it’s not the usual horror movie. I would say that Director Yam Laranas is indeed a very good director – no more questions ask – Yam Laranas is Yam Laranas. And The Road story line was well-directed!

I would not talk too much because I don’t want to be a spoiler here, so better watch out for it and see for yourself. “The Road” stars Carmina Villarroel, Marvin Agustin, Rhian Ramos, Barbie Forteza, TJ Trinidad, tween stars Alden Richards, Louise delos Reyes, Derrick Monasterio, Lexi Fernandez, Ynna Asistio and Renz Valerio.

Also starring in the film are John Regala, Lloyd Samartino, Gerald Madrid, Allan Paule, Dex Quindoza, Ana Abad Santos and Ms. Jacklyn Jose. So once again, The Road will be on the big screen starting November 30, 2011 under GMA Films.

No One Lives… THE ROAD!

Cosplay Theme at BUM’s Fashion Show

Local clothing brand BUM brings the Cosplay trend to the fore with a one-of-a-kind fashion show at the SM Mall of Asia. If you have a story to tell, don’t keep it to yourself. Flaunt and let the world know through fashion.
This has been the youth’s battle-cry these days. Not only are they daring, wearing their colors on their sleeves proudly, they are pushing the envelope when it comes to dressing up, as well.

Even the term “costume play” or “cosplay”, which is the act of dressing up as a fictional character inspired from an anime TV series, or a character they idolized, has found its way into the youth’s wardrobe. Cosplay is no longer a style but it has become a “trend” that is normally seen and worn on the streets. To underscore this “daring” and “experimental” style philosophy, BUM is putting together a fashion show on November 25 at the Music Hall of the Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Called Reveal Your Darkside, this fashion celebration is the culminating event of an ongoing nationwide contest. Since August 8, BUM has been receiving through its website (http://www.bumequipment.com.ph) countless entries from young stylistas who want to share the world their passion for the brand and the cosplay trend.

Interestingly, the fashion show will also showcase BUM’s new collection for the Holidays. So cosplay and BUM fanatics can expect a one-of-a-kind fashion event that would inspire them to express their angst, passion, and identity more freely through BUM Collections. Mall goers will enjoy BUM’s treats as early as 1pm with live games on screen. Shoppers can play live video games at the Music Hall venue and win fabulous prizes courtesy of our sponsors Netopia Internet Café and Ideal Vision. Register as early as 1pm and get a chance to win prizes in our event raffle such as NOKIA C1 cellphones, five (5) pieces of P500 GLOBE prepaid loads and BUM gift packs. Raffle draw will be held at exactly 6:30pm.

BUM products are available at BUM Boutiques and leading Department Stores nationwide. For Show details, visit www.bumequipment.com.ph and like us at www.facebook.com/bumequip

See you there!

GMA Network executives are jurors in the 39th International Emmy Awards

GMA Network Senior Vice President for Entertainment Wilma V. Galvante, Vice President for Program Management Jose Mari R. Abacan, Vice President for GMA Worldwide Roxanne J. Barcelona, and Vice President for News Programs and multi-awarded broadcast journalist Jessica A. Soho were selected as members of the distinguished panel of jurors in the 39th International Emmy Awards.
Wilma Galvante
Jose Mari Abacan
Roxanne Barcelona
Jessica Soho
Galvante participated as a juror in the final round of judging for the Best Actress category, where she reviewed entries from Brazil, Hong Kong, Sweden, and United Kingdom. Galvante was a judge in the Emmys in 2006 for the Best Comedy Program category, and in 2008 for the Best Actor category.

Soho, meanwhile, was tasked to evaluate entries in the English-Language Current Affairs category, which include entries submitted by news organizations from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. This is the second time in a row that the award-winning broadcaster was chosen to judge in the Emmy Awards after being a judge in the Documentary: Asia/Africa/Middle East category last year.

Abacan also returned as a juror, now in the Comedy category. Nominees in this division include semi-finalists from each of the four Emmy judging regions, namely, Europe, Latin America, English-Language, and Asia/Africa/Middle East. Last year, Abacan was a judge in the TV Movie/Mini-Series category.

For the fifth time, Barcelona joined the panel of jurors, this time in the final round of judging for the TV Movie/Mini-Series category. She likewise reviewed the regional semi-finalists from the four abovementioned regions. The last time Barcelona judged the International Emmys was in 2008 for the TV Movie/Mini-Series category.

Known as the Oscars of the television industry, the annual International Emmy Awards is organized by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, a worldwide organization composed of leading media and entertainment figures from all sectors of television including internet and mobile.

As it aims to recognize excellence in international television programming, the award-giving body gathers only the most knowledgeable TV practitioners from various fields of expertise to screen and select the winners.

The 39th International Emmy Awards was held on November 21 in New York City.
